More than 40 years after the Reform movement ordained the first American woman rabbi, the majority of US Jews have come to accept women as members of the clergy. Like most women today, these rabbis tend to wear many hats and juggle multiple identities, often that of clergy, wife and mother.

Increasingly, however, some female rabbis are remaining single, but still donning the mantle of motherhood. And they make no apologies for doing so.

“There is nothing wrong with how I live my life,” says Rabbi Lisa Gelber, one of the subjects of “All Of The Above,” a new documentary film about women rabbis who have become single mothers by choice that will air on ABC affiliates nationwide beginning on March 23.

Is Her Maternity Leave Over?

September 20, 2011

This post first appeared as “Natalie Portman To Produce ABC Show” on The Shmooze blog of the Forward.

Though actress Natalie Portman has hinted that she might retire to be a full-time stay-at-home mom to little Aleph Portman-Millepied, she definitely hasn’t quit show business completely.

It was recently announced that Portman will executive produce a new TV series that will be a follow-up to the 1980s miniseries, “Scruples,” about a wealthy Boston family. The new series will be adapted from two books by Judith Krantz: the 1978 novel “Scruples” and its 1992 sequel.

“Scruples 2,” as it is being referred to at the moment, will be directed for ABC by Tony Krantz, the author’s son.

Portman has reportedly turned down acting opportunities since giving birth, but this turn as an executive producer may signal that she’s considering joining the ranks of working Jewish mothers everywhere.

An Amazing Recovery

June 28, 2011

This post first appeared as “Gabrielle Giffords ‘Did Not Look Sick’ in First Public Appearance Since Injury” on The Shmooze blog of the Forward.

“She did not look sick at all,” an ABC reporter said of Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, who made her first appearance at a public event today after having been shot in the head nearly seven months ago in Tuscon.

Although there were no television cameras on site at Space Center Houston, where Giffords’s husband Mark Kelly and the other Space Shuttle Endeavour astronauts were being honored, ABC did have Gina Sunseri on the scene.

According to Sunseri, Giffords, who was dressed casually in jeans and sneakers, sat in a wheelchair most of the time, but stood to hug and kiss her husband as he received his Spaceflight Medal for returning safely from his recent mission. “She was in a wheelchair but she was very animated, she was smiling, she was chatting with people next to her,” the reporter noted.

Giffords, who received a standing ovation from the hundreds of guests in attendance at the ceremony as she was wheeled in, has been staying in Houston for continued rehabilitation following her release from an area hospital earlier this month.
