World Food Prize Goes to Israeli Innovator

June 14, 2012

This piece was first published on The Jew and the Carrot blog at the Forward.

World Food Prize winner Daniel Hillel

“If there is such a thing as rock star status in the world of soil physics, then Daniel Hillel has attained it,” Eric Herschthal wrote in a 2010 article titled “The Man Who Made The Deserts Bloom” in The Jewish Week.

Now, two years later, Hillel, an 81-year-old American-born Israeli scientist has won this year’s World Food Prize for his water-saving agricultural methods used first in Israel, and then around the world. These methods, known as micro-irrigation and drip-irrigation have increased crop production on arid lands in 30 countries.

It was a fortuitous encounter with Israel’s first prime minister, David Ben-Gurion, that set Hillel on his remarkable path. According to Herschthal’s article, Ben-Gurion met Hillel when he and his wife Paula came to visit Sde Boker, a kibbutz in the Negevwith the mission of settling the desert that Hillel had helped establish in 1952.

Bibi’s Bible Study

December 12, 2011

This post first appeared as “Bibi Launches Bible Study Meeting” on The Shmooze blog at the Forward.

It seems that Bibi is feeling the need to connect with the Word of God these days. Last Friday, Israel’s prime minister announced at a ceremony marking thirty days since the passing of his late father-in-law, Shmuel Ben-Artzi, that he has established a regular Bible study meeting in his official residence in Jerusalem.

The study sessions, which Netanyahu dedicated to the memory of Ben-Artzi, are actually a resurrection of a practice of Israel’s first prime minister, David Ben-Gurion, and also of Prime Minister Menachem Begin. Netanyahu mentioned in a speech Sunday marking the 38th anniversary of Ben-Gurion’s death that Ben-Artzi, a noted poet and Bible scholar, used to attend the study meetings hosted by Ben-Gurion.

A Change Of Face

August 15, 2011

One of the latest signs at the J14 Revolution protests in Israel.

It’s an image of David Ben-Gurion morphing into Avigdor Lieberman. The words, “I will not stay silent, because my country has changed its face,” are taken from Ehud Manor’s popular song, “Ein li eretz acheret” (I have no other country).
