Joan Rivers knows how to dish it out, but she can become defensive when criticism is leveled at her. The plastic surgery-addicted comedienne walked out during an interview last week when CNN interviewer Fredericka Whitfield pressed her about the perceived meanness of her comments about celebrities’ sartorial choices on “Fashion Police,” her show on the E! network.

“It’s not mean, it’s not mean, it’s not mean, I tell the truth,” Rivers, 81, insisted.

Known for her caustic and politically incorrect humor, Rivers defended her comedic style by saying that humor helps people get through rough times.

If there’s one thing Joan Rivers doesn’t do, it’s keep her opinions to herself.

The comedian usually makes her points through humor, not always to everyone’s delight.

But she isn’t goofing around with her serious, heartfelt support for Yuval and Liran, a gay Israeli couple trying to have a child by surrogacy.

The pair, who depleted their savings trying to become fathers, issued YouTube a plea for help from the public in February, and are now trying to crowdsource enough money to work with a surrogacy agency in the US.

No other avenue toward having a child is open, as the doors to adoption and surrogacy are effectively closed to gay Israeli couples at home.

That’s where Rivers stepped in.

Barry Manilow: I’m Not Like Joan Rivers

May 24, 2012

This post first appeared on The Shmooze blog at the Forward.

In anticipation of a performance in Dublin yesterday, singer Barry Manilow sat down for a cozy conversation with the Independent. There was some talk of “Mandy,” “Can’t Smile Without You” and “Copacabana,” but for the most part, Manilow used the opportunity to reveal some interesting tidbits about his family’s past, as well as about his present appearance.

Manilow told the Independent that he is “a secret Irishman.” While the Jewish community can proudly claim the 68-year-old singer as one of our own, we should also be aware of the fact that Barry Alan Pincus (he adopted Manilow, his mother’s maiden name, as his last name after his bar mitzvah) could have very well have been Barry Kelliher instead. That’s because his father was a non-Jewish Irish man named Harold Kelliher.
