Mug Shot Margol

August 23, 2011

This post first appeared as “Israeli Pop Star Margol’s Mug Shots Leaked” on The Shmooze blog of the Forward.

Margalit Tzanani looks a lot better here on her album cover than in her mug shots.

According to a report by Israel’s Channel 2 News, someone is going to be in big trouble. And it’s likely going to be someone working in the Israeli Prison Authority.

Apparently, someone has leaked mug shots of Israeli singer and celebrity Margalit Tzanani (often referred to in the Israeli press by the nickname Margol) taken at the time of her arrest last week on the suspicion that she blackmailed, threatened and extorted her manager. The possibility that she was also involved in fixing the outcome of the Israeli “American Idol”-style show “Kochav Nolad” has been batted around in the press since her arrest.

Chances are that it was someone on the inside who is responsible for leaking the photos. Tzanani reportedly burst into tears in court when she found out that the pictures had been published and circulated. Prison officials have said that whoever is responsible for the leak will be fired immediately.

Nikia Brown Does It Again

June 15, 2010

Nikia Brown advances on Kochav Nolad, Israel’s version of American Idol. Here, she is singing a song by Ivri Lider. Looks like the judges have gotten past the whole accent thing. It’s about time -it’s not as though Nikia is the only immigrant to Israel to speak Hebrew with an accent (just listen to some of the judges themselves…)

She’s Not in Kansas Anymore

May 28, 2010

Nikia Brown is not in Kansas anymore. More exactly, not in Kansas City, where she is from. She, her husband and young daughter are African-American converts to Judaism now living in Holon, Israel. For those of us who write a lot about the mishegas that goes on within the Jewish community, it is refreshing to hear someone like Brown talk about why she was drawn to Judaism and what being a Jew and an Israeli mean to her.

I couldn’t stop thinking, “You go, girl!” a I watched Brown audition for Kochav Nolad (A Star is Born), the Israeli version of American Idol. The fact that she doesn’t yet speak Hebrew didn’t stop her from learning one of my all-time favorite songs, “Uf Gozal” and singing it in front of those notoriously tough Israeli celebrity judges. Seeing  famous performer Margalit Tza’anani grinning from ear to ear at the end of the video, exclaiming, “You make me want to sing with you! You make me want to sing with you!” is priceless.
