Matzo For Mr. President

March 14, 2013

matzo-232455Jewish mothers (and others) have been worried for some time now whether President Obama will have enough to eat while on his first official visit to Israel next week. We’ve known since early February that the president will have to forgo eating chametz when he stays next week at the King David Hotel, which will have already made its kitchens kosher for Passover.

“When U.S. President Barack Obama said yes to a long-overdue visit next week, his first since becoming president in 2008, it’s not clear that he knew what he was getting himself into. Gastronomically, anyway,” suggested Ilene Prusher in Haaretz.

This time, it’s not Sarah Silverman using profane-laced humor to convince Millenials do the schlepping. Instead, it’s cool, young Jewish singer Michelle Citrin doing a clever parody of Carly Rae Jepsen’s “Call Me Maybe.”

Howard Stern On Obama’s “Baby Step” Toward Marriage Equality

May 11, 2012

This post first appeared as “Stern Weighs in on Obama Marriage Stance” on The Shmooze blog at the Forward.

Radio host Howard Stern is telling President Obama to walk the walk and not just talk the talk. While so many other celebrities have been praising the president for publicly stating earlier this week that he is personally in favor of same-sex marriage, Stern is criticizing him for not going far enough.

“I wish the president actually had gone further. I wish he said he was going to back some legislation on the national level,” Stern told reporters at a press conference about his new gig as an “America’s Got Talent” judge. However, the shock jock did admit that he did appreciate the president’s “evolving” views on marriage equality. “Okay, this is a good first step,” he said. “It’s a baby step.”
