Hurricane Preparedness

Just now a good friend of mine was updating me  by phone about hurricane preparedness as she walked up and down Broadway in my old (and very much missed) Upper West Side neighborhood.

She told me that she saw a sign saying, “We are not afraid. We are staying open until Irene comes,” on the door of The Town Shop. For those of you unfamiliar with this New York institution, it’s a venerable women’s undergarment (or, shall I be fancy and say “lingerie?”) store. I’ve been lost without it since moving out here to California. No one knows how to fit a bra like those ladies who work at the Town Shop.

Good thing the store is staying open until the very last minute. It would make perfect sense that women would be rushing there instead of to the grocery store for food and water, or to the hardware store for flashlights and batteries. No one should have to face a massive hurricane without good support that lifts and separates.
